Model 1861 Springfield Musket

For our weekly look at the BHHA Collection, we are taking a look at a Model 1861 Springfield Musket from the Civil War.  This .58 caliber, percussion rifle-musket, dated 1862, was used by Charles Myrtengren of Company D, Illinois 57^th Infantry.  He was a harness maker in the Bishop Hill Colony and enlisted in September 1861. Corporal Myrtengren was killed at the Battle of Shiloh on April 6, 1862.
