As part of our 2023 Bishop Hill Civil War Days activities during the first weekend of May. we will have a program about President Lincoln. I mean you can’t have a Civil War Days event without something about Lincoln. So on Sunday May 7, local historian Michael Zecher will present “A President Emerges From The Prairie – Abraham Lincoln in Illinois” at noon in the Steeple Building Museum, located at 103 North Bishop Hill Street, Bishop Hill, IL
For the first 80 years of our nation’s existence, every American President was born in one of the 13 Colonies that originally formed the United States. In 1860 Abraham Lincoln changed that by becoming the first person elected from what was at that time the “uncultured west”. At a time when eastern states boasted of being the cultural and educational pinnacle of the country, how could a man with virtually no formal education even be considered for the highest office in the land? During this presentation, Michael Zecher will discuss how Abraham Lincoln’s early life and career in Illinois led to his being selected as the man to lead our country through its darkest hour.
This presentation is free and open to the public. For more information about our 2023 Bishop Hill Civil War Days Festival and our free activities, please call 309 927-3899 or email bhha@mymctc.net
