Outside of Bishop Hill, I sometimes hear people wonder why museums are needed or if they even helped the community.  I say museums are among a community’s greatest assets and the statistic bear that out.  Consider the facts assembled by the American Alliance of Museums:

  • In the U.S., museums, zoos, aquariums, etc. account for $135 billion in economic activity and more than 4 million jobs each year
  • Museums spend more than $2 billion per year on education
  • For every  dollar that the government grants to museums and the arts, the government eventually receives $7 back in taxes.

Museums are an economic and educational force in the community.  When you support a local museum, you are also helping out your local community.
